Celebrating Sofia Hoffmann’s Global Jazz Journey on International Jazz Day
On International Jazz Day, we honor the transformative power of jazz and spotlight artists who embody its spirit. Sofia Hoffmann, a Portuguese-German singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist, stands out for her unique fusion of jazz with Indian classical music, Portuguese fado, and global rhythms.
Sofia’s musical journey began with classical guitar studies under Walter Lopes, followed by vocal training with Maria do Rosário Coelho. Her passion for jazz was ignited during her time in Milan, studying under Italian jazz vocalist Laura Fedele, and later in Lisbon with Portuguese jazz singer Maria João. These experiences laid the foundation for her distinctive sound.
In 2014, Sofia’s encounter with Indian classical music maestro Roop Verma profoundly influenced her artistry. Under his guidance, she delved into the sitar and Indian vocal techniques, further enriching her musical palette.
Her debut album, One Soul (2019), showcased her ability to blend jazz with diverse musical traditions. The follow-up, Rebirth (2022), produced by Grammy-winning pianist John Beasley, featured collaborations with sitarist Arjun Verma and Portuguese legends Rui Veloso and Rão Kyao. The album’s standout track, “Esperarei,” written during the pandemic, captures themes of hope and resilience.
Sofia’s latest project, [In]Love (2024), continues her exploration of love’s multifaceted nature through jazz, pop, and Indian classical influences. The album includes collaborations with music veteran Ivan Lins, further cementing her place in the global jazz scene.
